Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll? Not anymore

Music business sure has changed, no surprise here, note this article on MSNBC:

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll? Not anymore. Guitar, drums and a business plan are now ingredients for success

and this

Experts say changes in the industry are requiring artists to be even more mindful of ways to market themselves, and their music, to the public. […] with cheaper recording equipment thanks to computer technology, more bands are competing for fans’ attention and dollars.

  1. The market place is so overloaded with product that musicians must realise that marketing is more important in some respects than the music. A hard fact perhaps but true all the same.

You might like to have a look at my book on business leadership, aptly titled ‘Sex, Leadership and Rock’n’Roll’ and available on Amazon etc.

  2. Whoa, Peter, commenting on this old article of mine?

But you’re welcome, your book seems to be worth the pitch, if it inspires people to think more creatively about leadership, teams and organizations that’s a good thing.

  3. Hi Martin,

Just cos the article is old does not mean it’s not worthy!

There’s a related discussion going on at Tom Peters’ website http://www.tompeters.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=10249

    Very best

  4. Peter, you’re right – this topic doesn’t seem to lose its relevance. I just discussed these issues at the BarCamp Jena with some guys deeply interested in music industry / creative industries as a whole and we all agreed that we ain’t seen nothin’ yet (especially in regard to business models for the long tail).

Oh – and thank you for pointing me to this other discussion, I really enjoyed your Beatles / team processes example. Guess I need to read your book after all 😉

    Cheers,
